A tailor’s ham is also an essential; you simply can’t get a nice press on a curved edge by flattening it onto the ironing board. A ham like this has many curves, so you can always find one to match your dart, hip, or princess seam.
Tailor’s hams are also enormously useful when making collars, particularly those with wool or fabric with some memory to them. To use a ham to put a roll line into a collar, set up your ham vertically. You can use a ham holder, some cans, or the vice on the workbench in the garage. Next, wrap your collar around it like a neck. Shoot this unit full of steam and let it dry. Presto, a beautifully shaped, already-pressed collar ready for insertion into the garment.
